What drives the cost

Four things determine the bulk of a safari price. Park and conservation fees are fixed government charges, and in Tanzania they are substantial; the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are among the more expensive in Africa. Accommodation is the biggest variable, ranging from simple camps to luxury lodges. Vehicle and guide costs cover your private 4x4, fuel and your guide's expertise. Season matters too, with peak months costing more.

The accommodation tiers

Budget camping safaris keep costs down with simple tented camps and shared facilities, and they are a genuine, authentic way to see Tanzania. Mid-range lodges and tented camps offer comfortable rooms, en-suite bathrooms and good food at a moderate price. Luxury lodges and premium mobile camps offer exceptional comfort, prime locations and personal service, at a premium. All three see the same wildlife.

Fixed costs you cannot avoid

Park fees are the same whether you camp or stay in luxury. This is why very cheap safaris are viewed with caution: once park fees, a quality vehicle, fuel, a professional guide and fair staff wages are covered, there is a real floor below which corners are being cut. Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true.

Getting the best value

To stretch a budget: travel in the green season when rates drop, join a small group to share vehicle costs, choose mid-range accommodation which offers the best comfort-to-price ratio, and give priority to the parks that matter most to you rather than trying to see everything. A well-planned shorter trip beats a rushed long one.
