Lake Eyasi
A remote soda lake at the foot of the Ngorongoro highlands, home to the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers and Datoga pastoralists.
Lake Eyasi lies in a quiet corner of northern Tanzania, southwest of the Ngorongoro highlands, where the land is dry, the light is golden, and life follows rhythms that stretch back thousands of years. This is one of the last places in Africa where you can meet the Hadzabe, one of the world's last true hunter-gatherer peoples, who still live by the bow and the seasons. A morning hunt with the Hadzabe, followed by a visit to the neighbouring Datoga blacksmiths and pastoralists, is among the most authentic cultural experiences in Tanzania. The lake itself draws flamingos and waterbirds in the wet season and shrinks to a shimmering pan in the dry months. Lake Eyasi pairs beautifully with a northern safari, adding a profound human dimension to the wildlife.
